Kimberly Akimbo

by David Lindsay-Abaire
Directed by Chris O’Connor
An FSC Production

Originally produced in New York City by the Manhattan Theatre Club on February 4, 2003. Commissioned and first produced by South Coast Repertory. Originally presented as a staged reading at the 2000 National Playwrights Conference, James Houghton, Artistic Director, at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.

Set in suburban New Jersey in 1999, Kimberly Akimbo tells the story teenager Kimberly Levaco who suffers from a rare condition causing her to age rapidly, making her appear much older than her actual years; as a result, she navigates the challenges of adolescence while trapped in the body of an elderly woman, dealing with a dysfunctional family, and ultimately finding a connection with a fellow outsider at school, all while confronting the reality of her shortened life expectancy. This is the 2000 play that Lindsay-Abaire later based his Tony-winning musical on.
